  1. Development of a biocompatible electro-active membrane in PEDOT:PSS to recapitulate physiological peristalsis. Trinity College, Monaghan Lab. This thesis will be conducted at the Trinity Centre for Bioengineering (TCBE), Trinity Biosciences Institute and the Department of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering, Trinity College Dublin, Ireland. Trinity College Dublin Ireland’s oldest university and is recognised internationally as Ireland’s premier university and is ranked in 98th position in the top 100 world universities [QS World University Rankings 2016]. Smart biomaterials are being increasingly desired in order to reduce space and volume occupation in bioreactor systems, especially as miniaturisation of such systems is gathering pace. This project aims to develop a smart biomaterial (both in terms of its composition and additive manufacturing process) that is responsive to electrical stimulus by means of mechanical deformation (strain). This project aims to develop a material that when subjected to pulsatile electrical stimulation will elicit mechanical deformation of a membrane surface, while at the same time be of suitable biocompatibility. The ideal candidate should have a strong interest in biomaterial development, materials characterization (including electromechanical measurements, mechanical properties, cytocompatibility).
